“The first step toward creating an improved future is developing the ability to envision it. VISION will ignite the fire of passion that fuels our commitment to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to achieve excellence. Only VISION allows us to transform dreams of greatness into the reality of achievement through human action. VISION has no boundaries and knows no limits. Our VISION is what we become in life. ”
Tony Dungy

Someone close to me commented recently, that January always seems to be a powerful month for me.  She said I always come out of the gates into a New Year charged up.  I have a January birthday, so I have a built reflection points a few weeks a part.

My friend Krista Green first introduced me to the “Vision Document” when I worked with her company Organized for Life in ’06/07.   That winter, I took a solo road trip down to Key West to get things lined up in my head.

I keep an electronic archive of my  of all of my Vision Docs–and it’s fun to go back and reference previous versions.  In my first Vision Doc, I included a list of 10 entrepreneurs that I want to work with.  Four years later and I have worked with 5 of their businesses for money and partnered with 2 others.

The starting point to a strong mentorship is a vision of where you want to get to.  Build out a document that charts your goals at least 10 years out. Then work backward 5 years, 3 years, 1 year.  Write it from the perspective of what you will have accomplished at that date – e.g. January 1st, 2014 – MENTORnetwork is a nationally recognized brand and has contributed to the formation of over 10,000 mentorships.  Also remember that your personal and professional life are not exclusive of one another.  Your Vision Document should detail your future accomplishments in all areas of your life.
