How to create an effective mentoring request via e-mail or LinkedIn

Fri, Nov 8, 2013

Many entrepreneurs struggle with how to introduce themselves to an mentor and inspire them to connect. It is not as difficult as it seems, you just need to know how to communicate yourself and your request effectively.

Here’s a template you can use to create a mentoring request via e-mail or LinkedIn:

i) Formally address the individual you’re writing to

Dear __________________,

II) Introduce yourself and your company

My name is ________________ and I am the (title) of (company name). We _______________ (state the problem you solve and how you solve it- aka your company elevator pitch).

III) State why you’re writing to them and make your request.

I was deeply inspired by (state why you are inspired to connect with the mentor) and thus wish to connect. Currently (state the stage of your startup and the challenges you are facing). With your success/expertise (choose one) in _____________, I would sincerely appreciate connecting with you to receive your insight on how we can overcome these challenges. Would you be willing to have a 15 minute phone conversation with me? (Start with a small ask of their time to test the potential quality of the relationship, if it is resonant you can meet in person for a longer period of time)

IV) Show gratitude for their time and considering your request

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

V) Formally sign off and include your electronic signature with your contact information

*If you want feedback on your mentor requests, post your versions below and I’d be happy to provide you with some insight.*
