Creating mentorship connections: Recap from Canadian Mentorship Challenge

Mon, Nov 25, 2013

SociaLIGHT Speed Mentoring

Instead of our regular Friday post, we have a special post this week to recap our activities over Global Entrepreneurship Week (November 18-24). For the 2nd year, the Canadian Youth Business Foundation and Startup Canada ran the Canadian Mentorship Challenge in celebration of GEW. The challenge was for organizations/individuals to create the most number of connections between mentors and entrepreneurs during GEW; mentorship has been identified as a major need among Canadian entrepreneurs.

Here’s how we were involved in the challenge:

Monday November 18th: Power of Connection chat with Raeallan

We co-hosted a tweet chat with Bobby Umar of Raeallan on the topic “Fear of Mentorship”. Bobby hosts these tweet chats every Monday at 11am EDT for one hour to discuss a topic about Connection as it pertains to Leadership, Relationships and Development.

Bobby Umar has over 100,000 followers on Twitter, all organic and genuine. Through co-hosting with Bobby we generated 20,442,265 impressions with 1,169 tweets and a reach of 504,187 followers.

Check out the storify here to look at the chat “transcript”. We’ll be providing a summary of the conversation in Friday’s post.

Friday November 22nd: “WHY Mentor” Breakfast & MENTORup Orientation

On Friday morning at 8am we brought together approximately 20 of our MENTORnetwork mentors and community partners to connect and discuss the “WHY” of mentoring. We shared stories of how mentors had influenced our lives and made several new connections that may lead to exciting collaborations. Our discussion was facilitated by the incredible Stephen Shedletzky of Inspiraction, our local “Start With Why” expert.

At 10:30am we held a small MENTORup orientation at the Centre for Social Innovation- Regent Park location. We gave out free, 3-month access to our platform to all the attendees!

Saturday November 23rd & Sunday November 24th: SociaLIGHT Conference

The SociaLIGHT Conference is one of Toronto’s leading leadership & entrepreneurship events. We supported the conference team to compete in the Canadian Mentorship Challenge by hosting a mini-speed mentoring event during the lunch break. We helped make over 50 mentor-mentee connections. Pictures can be seen here.
